Turkey was devastated by an earthquake on March 12, 2023, leaving a path of devastation and hopelessness in its wake. The magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck at 9:14 AM local time. The earthquake was felt across Turkey, as well as in neighbouring countries, including Greece and Bulgaria.


Hospitals and schools among other structures and infrastructure were severely damaged by the earthquake. Electricity and water services had been interrupted, and several routes had become impassable. Rescue personnel worked nonstop in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake to look for survivors among the wreckage of fallen structures. According to the latest reports, the earthquake has claimed the lives of over 1,000 people, with many more injured or missing.


The international community had offered its support and assistance to Turkey. Humanitarian organisations helped people impacted, and nations like the United States, Russia, and France contributed assistance. However, the scale of the Disaster was significant, and it will take time and concerted efforts to fully address the needs of those affected.


The earthquake is a stark reminder of the fragility of human life and the importance of disaster preparedness and response. Turkey is in an area prone to earthquakes, and therefore, the country should have adequate measures in place to mitigate the impact of earthquakes and ensure the safety of its citizens.
